In the Delhi Metro, amidst the rising levels of chatter, ringtones, music and game tones, two familiar voices, alternating between Hindi and English, coming from the speakers positioned just above, are directed right at you, flooding the tube with instructions.
This sound piece was created from interviews with the two people whose voices are used for the Delhi Metro loudspeaker announcements, Rini Simon Khanna and Shammi Narang. Talking about the construction of speech, its measured process, pointing out its nuances and styles and speaking about their responsibility of ‘being a voice’, the work is a reflection on the technological environments of public transportation with their landscape increasingly populated by instructions.
The sound piece was designed to be heard on headphones, accompanying you on the metro via the mobile application “Listen Up! Delhi” during the India Art Fair (2014).
