Script and play reading
The story follows a single adventure of ‘X’ and ‘O’ into the depths of the forest in search of enchantments and enlightenment while following the crystal clear instructions of the “director”. The “storyteller” tags along on this journey, providing the much-needed context to their actions.
Written while I was an artist-in-residence in a studio in the midst of a forest in Maine, the play started as a meditation on such modes of artistic production. It introduces the forest as a “spatial product” (Keller Easterling) and reflects on the hopes, dreams and desires it produces. Finally, the play was written for and read aloud in a taxidermy museum. Despite the dislocation the script acts as a request to the actors and the audience to preserve the imagination of the forest.
Read the script below:
Listening to a Fable (stereo sound, 6:27 mins) is a short sketch. It plays around with the recording of the play reading and punctuates it with cartoon (Hannah Barbara) sound effects as an attempt to recreate the dissonance of listening to a fable in a taxidermy museum.
